Why does tap water in America smell strange?

Everywhere I go in the states the tap water smells quite vile. Almost like swimming pool water. This includes Miami, New York and Los Angeles – hotels, peoples houses, everywhere.

This is compared to water in london, which just tastes like (quite hard) spring water. I can drink tap water back home, but not here in america, because it smells so bad.

Why?

Most of the water in the US is chemically treated to make if safer for us. It’s not unhealthful, though it may be unpleasant. It’s better in the smaller towns, as their water isn’t so treated as the water for big cities. Many folks out in the country even have their own wells, which can be untreated as long as the water is tested and found to be safe to drink.

I grew up in the desert southwest (in the USA) and was quite used to water that had chemicals and minerals in it. When I lived in Sweden, I had to get used to what was for me tasteless water. I can drink it either way. If you’re here visiting, buy bottled water while you’re here. If you’re here to live for a few months or more, I’d advise you to get used to it. Drinking bottled water for too long isn’t as good for your teeth. The tap water here has fluoride in it. If you do choose to drink bottled water for your entire stay here, it might also be a good idea to supplement your tooth-care routine with a fluoride rinse.
