Can you get to Stonehenge, Avebury Stone Circle from London by train?

We will be staying in London for 4 days at a hotel across from Kings Cross station. I was wondering if you could get to Stonehenge, Avebury Stone Circle, and Windsor Castle by train from London? I’ve never been to England so I have no idea. Also any information would be appreciated as well.
thank you

There is a website I know of that could prove very useful for researching the journeys you want to make. It combines all types of public transport throughout the UK mainland including bus, tube, tram, coach, ferry and plane.

The site is http://www.transportdirect.info and lets you compare public transport and journeys by car so that you can decide what mode of transport would be better for you. To get the best results from the site, I would suggest that you play around with it yourself.

It has a journey planner which lets you punch in your start and finish points and provides detailed itineraries and fare information where available.

Make sure for Stonehenge and Windsor that you select the “Facility/attraction” option and use the postcode option for Avebury, for reasons I will explain later. I also recommend clicking on “Advanced” to bring up all the options in one form.

After obtaining details for each journey, click “New Search” at the top of the page to start again. You can make connecting journeys by clicking on “Modify journey”, where you can create a new journey before or after the one you just ran.

Now the introduction is complete, on with the journeys!

For Stonehenge, you would need to make a number of changes – you would not be able to go by train alone.

This would involve taking the tube to Leicester Square, onto Waterloo from where you can catch a train to Salisbury. Once at salisbury, you need to catch a bus, route STB for half an hour. You will then arrive at Stonehenge.

For Windsor Castle, starting from Kings Cross, take the Circle line to High Street Kensington. From there you can take a coach (Green Line, 702) to Windsor Town Centre. The castle is a 6 min walk away.

For Avebury stone circle, change the destination type to postcode and enter SN8 1RF into the destination box. The reason you have to enter a postcode is that Avebury stone circle is not recogised as an attraction for some reason. By giving you the postcode for the National Trust facility, you should be able to locate it more easily. Avebury is 20 miles north of Stonehenge, so I presume you will be wanting to visit them in the same hit. Either way I will present the suggested itinerary as if you were leaving from Kings Cross.

From Kings Cross, take the Hammersmith & City line to Paddington station. From there, take the national rail service to Swindon. At Swindon walk to the bus station and take bus 49. After a few minutes walk you will arrive at Avebury Stone Circle.

Here are some websites that can provide information about these locations:

Stonehenge: http://www.visitwiltshire.co.uk/salisbury/about-the-area/5-000-years-of-history/stonehenge-britains-best-historic-site
Windsor: http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/default.asp?action=article&ID=34
Avebury: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-avebury

Again, these are outline suggestions so your best bet is to tinker around on the transportdirect.info website. Good luck and have fun!
