London Area/Districts explanation – where to stay?

I’ve started researching hotels in London to stay this summer, but I’m so lost on where to even begin. Can someone tell me a little about each of these districts. Where to stay? Where to avoid? Any ones that aren’t conveniently located to the Tube? My husband and I like to sight-see, but can take the tube to get to the sights. In the evening, we like to go out to dinner and maybe out for a drink or two – but we’ll probably go to bed early (10pm or so), not too into the night-life.

Stay as close as possible to the city to make maximum use of your time sightseeing.
You would be bonkers to stay in Heathrow or Gatwick unless you have to board a connecting flight in 6 hours or so.
I would stay in a hotel located in the following areas. There are many good hotels in these areas, good places to eat out, and right next to the heart of the city. As another answerer said, all these areas are well-connected by London Underground or buses.

Bayswater
Chelsea/Knightsbridge
Kensington
Mayfair/Marylebone
Notting Hill
Victoria/Westminster

Canary Wharf/Docklands is a bit far from the city, and not sure how safe is the area at night. Steer clear. The rest above are touristy and well-heeled areas with less crime in general.
